THE SENSITIVITY AND SPECIFICITY OF KOH AND FUNGAL CULTURE IN THE EVALUATION OF DERMATOPHYTESARTHI R., MADUMATHI P. AND D. ARVIND PRASANTHAbstract A total of 180 samples of skin, nail and hair from patients having the sign of superficial mycoses were collected from IRT Perundurai Medical College and Hospital, Erode. The samples were subjected to KOH wet mount and cultured in media. Out of 180 samples, 84 isolates showed both KOH and culture positive, 16 of them were KOH negative and culture positive whereas 24 isolates seem to be KOH positive and culture negative. Trichophyton rubrum was found to be predominant dermatophytic species followed by T.tonsurans. The results concluded that KOH and culture plays a vital role in the isolation of dermatophytes.
