MANGROVE RESTORATION MAP PREPARATION USING REMOTE SENSING AND GIS

Abstract

Mangroves are coastal wetland plants distributed in tropical and subtropical region. They protect the environment from natural calamities like tsunami and storm surges. They act as a nursery ground for many marine animals and also significant role in controlling of global warming effect. It is necessary to preserve them this paper focuses on to find the site for mangrove plantation in the study area. For this, mangrove site selection equation have been developed using three environmental parameters such as interstitial salinity, particle size and soil organic content which have been collected from the field and integrated using GIS technology. Finally the mangrove site selection map has been prepared and the suitable area of 29 hectares has been found. This study suggests the approximate cost estimation for mangrove plantation is provided by the government agencies.
