COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY FOR A SUB-SURFACE INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

R. Lilly and G. Ravikumar

Abstract

The paper compares the temporal variation of water quality parameters of the selected observation wells in the study area and to calculate water quality index (WQI) to determine the water quality scenario before and after the construction of Chennai metro rail. Eleven observation wells were identified in and around Chennai metro rail corridor. Water quality parameters related to drinking and those which are likely to be assessed due to substructure development were selected. The selected parameters are pH, ElectricalConductivity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Total alkalinity, Chloride, Fluoride, and Sulphate. The data were collected for the period from 1995-2014. The data were divided into two periods as (1995-2008) before the construction and (2009-2014) after the construction. The temporal mapping using GIS was used to compare and analyze the current scenario of the affected wells with water quality parameters. Water Quality Index determination shows the quality of water before and after the construction of metro rail corridors.
