ANTI-EDWARDSIELLA TARDA ACTIVITY OF AQUEOUS GARLIC ALLIUM SATIVUM (L.) EXTRACT IN VITROSrijit Chakravarty, Ritu-Ranjanand T. Jawahar AbrahamAbstract The present study was conducted to illustrate the anti-Edwardsiella tarda activity of aqueous garlic Allium sativum (L.) extract. Anti-Edwardsiella tarda activity was tested by disc diffusion, well diffusion and broth dilution assays using aliquots of aqueous garlic extract that was equivalent to 0.5 mg garlic/mL. The disc diffusion assay with 4 μL of filter sterile aqueous garlic extract failed to inhibit the E. tarda. In well diffusion assay, the garlic extract at 25 μL and 50 μL levels produced zones of size 9.1±0.2 mm and 14.5±0.3 mm, respectively. The aqueous garlic extract at 2.5% concentration inhibited >90% of the E. tarda population in nutrient broth. The results of the present study demonstrated that the aqueous garlic extract has anti- Edwardsiella tarda activity in vitro, which can be harnessed to alternate commercial antibiotic for aquaculture use.
