ADSORPTION STUDIES OF VAT DYE (BROWN G) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING CHEMICALLY MODIFIED TREE LEAVES

A.MOLY AND A. SHAHUL HAMEED

Abstract

The studies were conducted using chemically modified leaf (CML) like neem leaf (Azadirachta indica), jack fruit leaf (Artocarpus heterophyllus), gulmohar flower leaf (Trailing arbutus), fern leaf (Nephrolepis exalatata) as adsorbents, for the removal of brown G (vat dye) dye from its aqueous solution. The performance of adsorption was tested by studying the effects of various parameters like initial dye concentration, pH, contact time and adsorbent dose. The results were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich models. It was observed that the percentage removal decreases with increase in dye concentration and remained nearly constant after 180 minutes, the equilibrium time. The effect of pH on the removal of brown G by CML showed that the colour removal decreases at pH higher than 8. The study confirmed that the adsorbents have prepared from chemically modified jack fruit, neem, gulmohar and fern leaf can be used to treat textile mill waste containing this dye.
