Abstract

The prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis in children in relation with different fluoride levels in drinking water of Jodhpur district, Rajasthan. A total of 1029 children’s aged 8-14 years was surveyed for dental fluorosis. Demographical information was collected using a pretested suitable questionnaire. The presence and severity was recorded by using Deans Index. Study area was divided into four categories with different fluoride level in drinking water. A fluoride level in drinking water was estimated by ion specific electrode (Thermo Scientific Orion Star A329, USA). Fluoride concentration in drinking was ranged from 0.8 ppm to 1000 ppm in boari block of Jodhpur district, Rajasthan. The prevalence of dental fluorosis according to varying level of fluoride concentration in drinking water were 95 (37.40 %) out of 254 in category I (<0.8 ppm), 112 (44.09 %) out of 250 in category II (1.2-1.6 ppm), 120 (47.24 %) out of 254 in Category III (2.8 ppm) , 169 (61.6% ) out of 271 in category IV (4-10 ppm). The overall prevalence of dental fluorosis was 496 (48.20%) out of 1029 children surveyed. Majority of children’s affected with dental fluorosis were residents of high fluoride contaminated water. The prevalence of dental fluorosis and severity increased with increased fluoride levels in drinking water. Hence the prevalence of dental fluorosis associated with high fluoride concentration in drinking water. Increasing fluoride level is major risk factor for dental fluorosis in children.
