GOSSYPOL – A TERPENOID BIOACTIVE METABOLITE FROM GOSSIPIUM AS MOSQUITO LARVICIDEV. Agatha Christy and K. JayaprakashAbstract The cotton terpenoid phenolic compound of plant Gossipium hirsutum was extracted in this present work. The extract was testified for its antimosquito larvicidal property against mosquito species Anopheles stephensi. The 48 hours exposure of various dilutions of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 ppm was given to the II to IV instar larval population. Percentage mortality data was analyzed statically. There was a trend of increased mortality percentage with respect to the concentration of gossypol exposure in experimental batches. The probit mortality LC50 value for III instar larva was used for toxicological studies. The results of histochemical demonstration for acetyl cholinesterase in supra esophageal ganglion had revealed that the gossypol inhibits the enzyme acetyl cholinesterase significantly when compared with control. The above results are discussed with the advantages of bioactive antimosquito larval compound.
