DESIGN OF DC-DC CONVERTERS FOR EFFICIENT HYBRID ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM

K. Suresh and R. Arulmozhiyal

Abstract

Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) with energy storage device cannot supply continuous power to the Load and not suitable for standalone operation. The unstable and fluctuations nature of wind makes unsuitable for standalone operation. Hence the generator output voltage should not be maintained constant. In order to maintain the constant output voltage a constant regulator is needed for both high and low wind speeds. Single mode of operation is not sufficient to supply the continuous power to the load. Different modes of operations are required to make an efficient energy storage system from different Wind energy and standby sources. The Objectives of this paper are to be Control the bidirectional converter output as constant by the variable source from the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). To operate the Bi-Directional Converter (BDC) in boost mode when the input is getting from Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) and also maintains a buck mode when the input is getting from grid-source. The total operation is classified into five modes are Wind sourced Battery mode, Wind sourced Battery-Load mode, Wind sourced Output mode, Battery sourced Load mode and grid source battery mode controlled by Speedgoat Real Time Target Machine (RTTM) by Math-function from MATLAB. Reduce the switching losses and increase the resolution with the Unidirectional Boost Converter (UDC), Bidirectional converter (BDC) and Inverter controlled by DsPIC30F4011 controller with PID control structure.
