ASSOSIATION BETWEEN PULAI WOOD DUST EXPOSURE AND LUNG FUNCTION WORKER OF PENCIL SLAT INDUSTRY IN MUSI RAWAS DISTRICT-SOUTH SUMATERA PROVINCE, INDONESIA

CHAIRIL ZAMAN

Abstract

This study was aimed to prove the relationship between the exposure to wood dust and lung function impairment in Pencil slat industry. The study was located in the Pencil slat manufacture company that use pulai wood (Astonia Scolaris) as the raw material located at Musi Rawas District, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. The total number of workers being studied was 90 subjects. The inhalable dust was measured using the gravimetric method using areal and personal sampling. The variables used are the demographic characteristics of worker such as age, sex, height, work duration, smoking status, and spirometry values of FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC. The determination of abnormal spirometry was predicted in the nomogram of Indonesia. The study showed that the numbers of wood dust were calculated as 0.002 – 2.490 mg/m3. The worker abnormal spirometry was 23.3%, and the spirometry values of FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC were not significantly correlate to the variables. The partial analysis shows that age, height, and multiplication of working duration with wood dust have an effect on lung function. Multivariate analysis of lung function on all variable shows that there was no significant relationship.
