DEGRADATION ASSESSMENT OF LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE BY STREPTOMYCE ALBUS

S. DEEPIKA AND R. JAYAMADHURI

Abstract

Low density polyethylene plays a key role in day to day life because of its excellent mechanical, thermal and barrier properties against water, sunlight and more over it is low cost. However disposal of low density polyethylene by incineration, landfilling pollutes the environment and causes various health hazards. Biodegradation helps us to solve the problem in order to gain much more attention for future generation to control pollution. The present work aims to investigate the effectiveness of biodegradation by isolated Streptomyces albus strain from garbage soil. The degradation studies were determined by weight loss, morphological changes by SEM analysis, mechanical properties by performing tensile strength, determination of CO2 evolution by sturm test and calculation of accumulated biomass during sturm test.
