Abstract

Groundwater quality plays an important role where vast population is dependent on groundwater for consumption and other household uses. It possesses direct impacts on the health of the consumers including humans. The quality of groundwater is mainly guided by the two factors, one is geogenic while the other is anthropogenic factor. The recent trend of excessive extraction of ground water for agricultural, industrial, and domestic utilities is liable for the degradation of the quality of groundwater. In light of these facts, groundwater samples from the handpumps of 4 blocks in Bareilley district of Uttar Pradesh was assessed in terms of physiochemical parameters such as turbidity, pH, hardness, EC, alkalinity, TDS, chloride, fluoride, nitrate, sulphate, iron and arsenic content. Based on the results obtained, iron and arsenic content in some locations were found surpassing the permissible limit. The result obtained through the research elicits the focus for a concerted effort in a holistic approach for improving the groundwater quality.
