Abstract

This paper presents an overview of modern boosting systems for internal combustion engines and their effect on the engine performance. We review different boosting systems, both existing and under development, including combined, two-stage parallel and sequential, hybrid systems and their peculiar features. We performed a comparative study of the influence of boosting systems on elasticity, adaptability, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness and specific power. Positive and negative trends and their impact on vehicle performance are demonstrated. It is shown, how the use of turbines with a design different from the traditional changes the engine performance. Based on the analysis, we make our conclusions and choose the most promising directions for further research aimed at improvement of gasoline and diesel engines performance through the use of combined boosting systems
