INFLEUNCE OF METHIONINE ON ERGOTHONEINE CONTENT AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF PLEOROTUS PLATYPUSR. BASKAR, S. SWEATHA, R. KARUNAMBIKA, G. RAMYA AND R. SHANTHIAbstract Mushrooms contain various polyphenolic compounds recognized as an excellent antioxidant due to their ability to scavenge free radicals. Pleurotus is one of the most widely consumed and cultivated mushroom species, around the world that contains several antioxidant properties. Precursors like methionine, cysteine and histidine act as an inducer to increase the ergothioneine content, an antioxidant. The study aims to grow mycelia of Pleurotus platypus, using methionine as precursor for enhancing the ergothioneine content. It was found that at 4mM concentration of methionine, the ergothioneine content was increased indicating that methionine is a good additive to enhance the ergothioneine level in Pleurotus platypus. The antioxidant activity was estimated using assays such as DPPH radical scavenging assay, ABTS radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing antioxidant potential assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay, which indicated that Pleurotus platypus possess moderate antioxidant activity.
