REMOVAL OF CHROMIUM FROM DRINKING WATER BY USINGSODIUM ALUMINATE MATERIALR. K. DAS, A. SWAIN AND B.B. KARAbstract In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to prepare sodium aluminate type material by heat treatment method, in which highly porous smaller particles are formed adequately. Thesynthetic material, thus formed has been utilized for chromium - VI adsorption study. Theinvestigation revealed that the synthetic materials could provide a high adsorption property for Cr(VI) uptake and it could be possible to remove 98% of Cr (VI) from the contaminated sources usingsodium aluminate (activated) as the adsorbing medium. The adsorption process has beenoptimized using different concentration of Cr (VI) in the water medium at various solid-liquidratio. It has been concluded that by using 20 mg/L Cr (VI), at solid: liquid ratio 4:10, it is possibleto extract about 99% of contaminated Cr (VI), from different water sources. In addition to the above, the thermodynamic parameters such as kinetics, chemical equilibrium, order and rate of thereaction are determined. The study revealed that Cr (VI) is activated by chemo-sorption methodwith a 1st order reaction rate. The process follows Freundlich isotherm where ionic exchange takesplace extensively.
