CHARACTERIZATION OF LEACHATE AND THE ASSESSMENT OFGROUNDWATER QUALITY BENEATH THE PALLIKARANAI DUMPSITE, CHENNAI, INDIAK. POONGOTHAI AND M. JAYAPRAKASHVELAbstract Leachate and groundwater samples were collected from Pallikaranai landfill site and its adjacent areas to study the possible impact of leachate percolation on groundwater quality. Concentration of various physico-chemical parameters, (e.g.pH, EC, TDS, NO3) and heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Fe,Ni,Zn, Cd, Mg) were determined in leachate and groundwater samples. Results were compared withthe Bureau of Indian Standards and WHO for drinking water quality standards. Highconcentrations of various physico-chemical parameters and heavy metals were found in leachatesamples and the mean concentration of ions, such as, Cl-, No3-, So42-, Fe, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ca, Na, PO4 andCOD. The ground water quality is significantly impacted by leachate seepages and signifies thatthe water quality is affected. Remedial measures are recommended to control leachate generationand protect the groundwater quality from further deterioration. leachate percolation is having animpact on the groundwater zone and water quality in the study area is threatened.
