Abstract

Upstream Oil & Gas Industry is associated with high risk activities. In spite of safe work practices, work place injuries continue to occur. Every Organization aspires to create safe work environment. Methods like effective hazard identification and interventions to restrain the personnel from ‘atrisk behaviors’ control the work place injuries. The inherent human factors are unexploredcontributors for work place accidents. International Oil and Gas Agencies recommends toimplement basic lifesaving rules to prevent fatal injuries at Oil and Gas facilities. This paperdescribes the effectiveness of interventions in reducing the ‘at risk behaviors’, the influence ofinherent human factors including age of the person, experience, work environment factors andpersonal fatigue in accident occurrence in Oil and Gas (Upstream) facilities. Also analysis of about100 fatal injuries and 1000 lost work day cases and the significant outcomes are discussed. Resultsof an effective intervention program practiced for three years at an Oil & Gas upstream facilityconcluded to be a positive trend in reduction of at risk behaviors at work place. An Attitude BarrierModel (ABM) considering the human factors in assessing the risk factors in prevention of workplace injuries are described.
