OPTIMIZATION OF PROCESS PARAMETERS FOR TURNING OF AISI 4140 STEEL UNDER DRY CONDITIONS FOR SAFER ENVIRONMENT

R. Thirumalai1 and Ganesan T.

Abstract

The reduction of cost plays an important role and simultaneously the quality of the production process also increases without any compromise for the cost reduction. The workpiece considered in this work for turning process is AISI 4140 steel using carbide tool for cutting operations. The cutting parameters selected are cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. Surface Roughness and Flank wear are considered as the responses against the cutting process parameters. This work is towards optimization of minimization of surface roughness and flank wear. This work aims at the optimization of the cutting process parameter in turning of AISI 4140 steel using Response surface methodology and Taguchi technique. ANOVA analysis is carried out and contour plots are plotted for surface roughness and flank wear.
