PHYSIOLOGICAL ADAPTATION OF SUNFLOWER TO IRON, MANGANESE AND ZINC POLLUTANTS

NANDITA JENA AND PRASANT KUMAR BEHERA

Abstract

Iron and Manganese and their combination with Zinc improved growth and yield of sunflower showing a significant enhancement. To find out the effect of various levels of Fe, Mn and Zn on the growth and yield potentiality of a crop was studied on sunflower plant. Physiological yield response decreased and showed an inhibitory effect when Fe, Mn and Zn were applied separately at the toxic level (480 m Mol). When Fe, Mn and Zn applied in combination resulted more growth and dry mass enhancement. Application of zinc in the form of zinc sulphate produced distinct improvement in the growth and yield of sunflower plants increasing the content of chlorophyll ‘a’ and ‘b’ specially at 120 and 240 m Mol but in toxicity at 480 m Mol shown antagonism effect by reducing photosynthetic activity in sunflower. Supplement of Fe and Mn also enhanced the growth and yield. Fe and Mn and their combination with Zn improved growth and yield of sunflower showing a significant enhancement than that of individual or combination of any two.
