PROTECT THE ECOLOGY BY MEANS OF USING INDUSTRIAL WASTE AS POND-ASH IN MAKING ARTIFICIAL AGGREGATES

R. Jagadeesan and S. Senthilkumar

Abstract

Disposal of industrial waste is always a serious issue to ecology and environment. Hence it is necessary to reuse the industrial waste. Attempt has been made to utilise pond ash in manufacturing ecofriendly artificial aggregates. Pond ash, a by-product of Thermal industry is used in present work. Pond ash from thermal industry creates air and soil pollution during disposal. Natural aggregates are taken from naturally occurring rocks. Digging a quarry destroys habitats of wildlife. The usage of natural aggregates has become serious issue in this developing infrastructure era. Therefore, utilisation of pond ash in manufacturing artificial aggregate overcome these environmental issues. Artificial aggregate of 20 mm size is manufactured using pond ash and cement which is cured for 7 days. Then packing density method of concrete mix design for M20 was performed and mechanical properties have been studied. Artificial aggregates made of pond ash are replaced for coarse aggregates in various proportions (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%). The obtained values are then compared with conventional method of manufactured concrete.40% replacement of artificial aggregates made of pond ash was found to be optimum.
