EFFECT OF METHYL HYDROXYETHYL CELLOSE AND ETHYLENEVINYL ACETATE COPOLYMER ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE: PART-B

Abdal-Kareem M.A. Dawagreh

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to investigate the mechanical and flexural properties of polymer modified concrete. This paper presents effect of hydroxyethyl cellose (Tylose MH 60004 P6) and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (Vinnapas 5011 L) on mechanical properties of concrete. This was carried out via incorporating different weight percentages of those two polymers in addition to zinc sterate and sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde, into the concrete mixture. Zinc sterate was used as a water reducing agent, and sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde was used to help in dispersing the hydrated cement particles in the cement rich mixture that has low water content. The fine aggregate utilized in the formulations was standard sand. Four formulations were prepared with different weight percentages of the modifiers. The properties studied are: flow, water absorption, compressive strength and flexural strength. The water absorption of the concrete a reduction with the addition of the polymeric modifiers, whereas, the mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength) and the flow of the concrete exhibited an increase with the addition of the polymeric modifiers.
