EFFICACY OF ALMOND SHELLS FOR REMOVAL OF DYE FROM WASTE WATER

DAISY KANDHARI AND JOYDEEP DUTTA

Abstract

The presence of waste products in the water is a worldwide problem. Industries such as rubber, textile, cosmetics etc disseminate intense color in water which affects the aquatic life & terrestrial life both as it incorporates into food web. Adsorption technique is widely used to remove certain classes of pollutants from waste water specially those which are not certainly biodegradable. The adsorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution on almond shells as a naturally occurring low cost & environment friendly adsorbent was studied using batch system. The removal of dye at different parameters – pH, contact time & concentration of dye were considered to evaluate the almond shell adsorption capacity. To have a better control- adsorbent dose, temperature and agitation speed were kept constant for all adsorption experiment. The data reveals that almond shell adsorb most of dye from aqueous solution after 40 mins of process affected by pH-4,6 & 8 but maximum adsorption capacity were obtained at pH-8 and nature of adsorption of dye with biowaste is endothermic. This study suggests that almond shells are promising biowaste which can effectively remove the methylene blue dye from the aqueous solution.
