ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES OF HONEY AND PROPOLIS PRODUCED BY BOTH HETEROTRIGONA ITAMA AND GENIOTRIGONA THORACICA STINGLESS BEENURHIDAYAH AB RAHIM A, MOHD HAFIZ MAIL, ESHAIFOL AZAM OMAR , ROZ AZINUR CHE LAMIN , SITI NURSHAHIDA NAZLI , NURHIDAYAH SABRI AND NOORZAFIZA ZAKARIAAAbstract Honey and propolis have remarkable properties, which has been investigated since ancient times. Scientific evidence stated that honey and propolis are capable of healing the wounds, cure coughing and asthma and even as an anti-diabetic therapy. Honey and propolis that used in our study were derived from both Heterotrigona itama and Geniotrigona thoracica stingless bee that was collected in Bayu Kelulut Smart Digital Farm, Kedah. Then, the antibacterial study by disc diffusion assay on different Gram Positive and Negative bacteria was carried out at the concentrated level. The findings revealed that stingless bee honey showed inhibition zone on the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. On the other side, stingless bee propolis also showed the zone of inhibition towards Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis. Stingless bee honey and propolis play a role as the natural chemotherapeutic agent against many bacterial infections and able to improve human health throughout their life.
