Shalini and Pratibha Naithani

Abstract

The continuous process of industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, population growth and water pollution are exerting pressure on freshwater availability. So the need to recycle and reuse of wastewater, is being more realized. Various wastewater treatment and recycling technologies are available but adsorption is a fast and low cost method. The cost effective adsorbent method has led to rapid growth in research. This work describes the development of low cost adsorbents from waste products. This study provides information about industrial wastewater and ground water samples in Haridwar city. Water samples were collected from seven locations, five waste water samples were collected from industries of SIDCUL (State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited) and two ground water samples were collected from village Salempur (Haridwar). The location of ground water samples has been polluted due to the discharge of untreated effluents. Batch method was employed for wastewater treatment by using a mixture of four natural adsorbents. The industrial waste water samples were contacted for 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 60 minutes and pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Salinity and Lead were analyzed. The mixture has been found effective in removal of lead from all the samples. The pH of all samples was slightly increased and all other parameters like EC, TDS, salinity and lead were decreased. From this study we can conclude that mixture of adsorbents is effective in removing lead and helpful in increasing the pH of water from industries and groundwater.
