ADSORPTION OF CU(II) AND CD(II) IONS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION USING CHITOSAN COATED BANANA FIBER AS ANADSORBENTMANISH MASIH AND PRASHANT ANTHONYAbstract Banana fiber coated with chitosan (CCBF) was evaluated for adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions from the aqueous solution. Different parameters like pH, contact time, dose, concentration, and temperature were evaluated in batch adsorption process. The peak adsorption attained in 480 min, 25°C at pH 7. The Thermodynamic, Adsorption isotherms and Kinetic models were studied for the adsorption of metal ions onto CCBF. Data obtained were best fitted by pseudo 2nd order kinetic model with highest regression coefficient (R2=0.9925, 0.9738) and intraparticle diffusion is the rate limiting step. Both metal ions follow Freundlich Isotherm model, with monolayer adsorption capacity of 64.156 mg/g and 56.179 mg/g for Cu2+ and Cd2+ respectively. Thermodynamic studiesshow the system is exothermic with value of ΔGo(-7.296, -7.390 kJ mol-1 K-1), ΔHo(- 3.495, -9.520kJ mol-1 K-1) and ΔSo (-0.019, -6.483kJ mol-1 K-1), a decrease in spontaneity was observed with the increase of temperature for both metal ions under study. The observations indicate that CCBF proved to be an effective adsorbent for Cu2+ and Cd+2 ions.
