CHARACTERISTICS OF MINE WATER AND ITS UTILIZATION

H. L. YADAV AND A. JAMAL

Abstract

Mine waters samples were collected from Northern CoalFields Limited, Singrauli, India and analyzed for the physicochemical characteristics like, temperature, pH, DO, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and concentration of trace metal. All the water quality parameters like, temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and TDS were taken on site using Hanna multiparameter pH meter model 9828. The results show that pH values ranges of 2.48 to 7.91; total dissolved solids, 611to1873 mg/L, electrical conductivity 748.00 to 2450.00 µS/cm; calcium, 31.00 to 282.75 mg/L magnesium, 10.00 to 70.01 mg/L; chloride,6.8 to 57.00 mg/L; dissolved oxygen, 4.53 to 6.65 mg/L; and the concentration of iron, 0.1659 to73.98 mg/L. The obtained results were compared with USEPA, WHO and CPCB Permissible Limits for water quality standards. It was observed that the water quality parameter in coal mines lies within permissible limits except few coals mines.
