IMPACT OF INDUSTRILATION ON SURFACE WATER IN AND AROUND NEELACHAL ISPAT NIGAM LIMITED (NINL), KALINGA NAGAR, JAJPUR DISTRICT, ODISHAS.S. PANDA, M.R. MAHANANDA AND M. CHHURIAAbstract This study is aimed to identify the impact of industrialization on seasonal surface water quality in and around NeelachalIspat Nigam Ltd. (NINL). The water samples were collected during premonsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon selecting four sampling points from each direction (East, west, north, south) with three replica for analyzing the physiochemical parameters (Temperature, pH, conductivity, Turbidity, Hardness, Chloride, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), TDS, COD, BOD, Alkalinity) followed by standard method of APHA (1995). Further, the Water quality index (WQI) was also calculated by taking the weighted limit as per the NSF. The results revealed that, the surface water quality varied seasonally in accordance of quantity of industrial effluents released into the water bodies in the vicinity of NINL. The water quality index as per the BIS standard fell under the bad category in all sampling sites, which are not suitable for human use unless subject to intensive treatment.
