Abstract

The demand for barley grain is growing very fast due to many reasons, and, in particular, due to the fact that livestock breeding in Kazakhstan is growing rapidly. In the South of Kazakhstan, as well as in Central Asia, barley is grown during the autumn sowing time predominantly. In these environmental conditions, drought is the most serious cause of the reduction in yields. In addition, barley cultivars should be resistant to fluctuations in mean annual precipitation, which can be very significant sometimes. The task of combining many economically valuable and biological features in one cultivar requires processing a large amount of collection material created at national and foreign breeding institutions. This article is devoted to the results of investigations of winter barley collection for productivity and adaptability to the conditions in the South of Kazakhstan. As a result of the investigation, highly-productive, winter-hardy, disease-resistant and hostility-resistant samples of winter barley have been found.
