PERFORMANCE OF DIFFERENT CAPSICUM HYBRIDS FOR EARLINESS AND YIELD UNDER VARIOUS PROTECTED STRUCTURES

Daljit Singh Gill, Ramesh Kumar Sadawarti and Madhu Sharma

Abstract

The study was carried out under different protected structures, i.e. naturally ventilated polyhouse (NVPH), net-house and walk-in tunnel for the two consecutive cropping season’s 2014 and 2015 at Centre of Excellence for Vegetables, Kartarpur, Jalandhar (Pb). The experimental results revealed that the plants grown under NVPH conditions have maximum plant height, fruit set percentage, number of fruits / plant, individual fruit weight, and total yield/plant whereas first flower initiation and first fruit harvest was early in all the three different colour groups of capsicum under walk-in-tunnel conditions. Among green coloured capsicums maximum profitability was recorded with Indira hybrid in terms of early first flower initiation, number of fruits/plant, total yield/plant and total yield/sq m over the hybrids Pasrella and Starlet. In red colour group, early first flowering, fruit harvest, higher individual fruit weight, and total yield/plant was recorded in hybrid Inspiration as compared to hybrids Bomby and Mazillia. Similarly, hybrid Bachata has earliness for first flower initiation, fruit harvesting, and recorded maximum plant height, percent fruit set, individual fruit weight, total yield / plant over hybrids Orobelle and Sven in the yellow colour group.
