CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY: IDENTIFYING THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PATIENTS WITH SCABIES ATTENDING SALAHALDEEN HOSPITAL IN TIKRIT-IRAQ

Abstract

Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by parasitic infection Sarcoptes scabiei. Patients complain nocturnal itching and skin rash. Scabies is worldwide infection about three hundred millions infected every year. The study performed to estimate the epidemiological characteristics of patients with scabies. A cross sectional study achieved in Salahaldeen hospital from first of August 2017-end of July 2018. Study sample chosen randomly and data collected from (1106) patients with scabies. Statistical description and analysis were done for data. The study found that (10.7%) of patients attending dermatology Department in Salahaldeen hospital had scabies. Scabies was more frequent among males (63.1%) more than female (36.9%). The results revealed that scabies were more frequent at age group thirty to less than forty years. High percent of scabies patients were lived in urban area (58.5%). (41.9%) were poor population. From 1106 scabies patients there were 407(36.9%) soldiers. The current study found that (52.6%) infested with scabies in summer, (71.8%) had positive history of itching among family members. The study concluded that scabies is common skin disease especially among low socioeconomic population. Scabies increased at the age (20-40) years particularly male. Health education to population about scabies, transmission, protective measures and treatment instructions is very important.
