SPATIAL MAPPING OF GROUNDWATER POTENTIAL ZONES FOR PERAMBALUR DISTRICT USING FREQUENCY RATIO MODEL

T. Karthikeyan, R. Lalitha, K. Arunadevi and K. Sivasubramanian

Abstract

In this study, the groundwater potential zones were delineated by adopting frequency ratio model for Perambalur District. Various thematic layers such as land use and land cover, lineament, geomorphology, drainage, slope and groundwater level were used for delineating the groundwater potential zone mapping. The groundwater potential zones of the study area are divided into four categories such as very poor, poor, moderate and good. It was found that most of the moderate potential zones are located in denudational origin and agricultural lands. Based on the Frequency ratio model, about 32.0% of the total area falls under very poor zone, 53.5% falls under poor zone, 14.0% falls under moderate zone and 0.5% falls under good potential zone. Finally, the results will be effective for proposing groundwater exploration at places with high groundwater potential and implementing artificial recharge structures at places with low groundwater potential for improving groundwater level in the study area.
