Abstract

Screening of the whole plant extract of Suaedamonoica to determine its antioxidant activity and quantification of total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The powdered form of Suaedamonoica was used for extraction with different solvents (ethanol, methanol, acetone, diethyl ether) and the antioxidant activity was determined using ABTS (2,22 -Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) assay. Quantification of total phenols and flavonoids was done using standard procedures. The analysis revealed that ethanol extract showed higher phenolic while Diethyl ether showed higher flavonoid content. Positive correlation was obtained between all antioxidant activity assays and total phenolic content where as negative correlation was obtained with total flavonoid content. The concentration of plant extract required for 50% inhibition (IC50)was found to be less in ethanol extract when determined using DPPH assay. The present study depicts Suaedamonoica with effective antioxidant activity that could be used against oxidative stress and other ailments.
