ACUTE TOXICITY AND BEHAVIOURAL RESPONSE OF CYPRINUSCARPIO EXPOSED TO INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENTS

S. SWAPNA

Abstract

Textile industrial effluent was known to cause toxicity in a wide variety of aquatic organisms and hence it is imperative to understand the eco-toxicological impact. An attempt was made to assess the acutetoxicity and behavioural changes on the fresh water fish, Cyprinus carpio. The fish were exposed to treated textile bleaching effluent to determine the LC50 values. Static bio assay experiments were carried out by Finney’s method. Fish in the toxic effluent exhibit irregular and erratic swimming movements, increased opercular movements and profuse mucus secretion. The results of the study indicate that treated textile bleaching effluent has toxic effect on the fish.
