Abstract
The study area lies between Ajay river to the north and Damodar river to the south. The subsurface geology of the area is blanketed by Gondwana super group of rocks and Tertiary-Quaternary alluvium comprising of a succession of sand, shale, clay towards the eastern side of the study area (CGWB). The paper includes investigation on both occurrences of groundwater regime and quality. Water table contour maps suggest that groundwater flow direction is broadly towards northwest and south, diverging from the central part of the study area. Different parameters including pH, TDS, EC, Chlorides, Total hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfate, Sodium and Potassium were studied for groundwater samples collected from sixty seven sampling sites of the aquifer. Water Quality Index suggests most of samples (59.8%) are of good quality type in terms of suitability for drinking purpose. On the basis of hydro chemical facies, these groundwater samples mostly belong to Ca-Mg-Cl facies.
