A STUDY ON THE INFLUENCE OF GENOTYPE, MEDIUM AND ADDITIVES ON THE INDUCTION OF MULTIPLE SHOOTS IN INDIAN COTTON CULTIVARS

SUCHETA TRIPATHY AND G.M. REDDY

Abstract

Ten high yielding Indian cotton cultivars were evaluated for multiple shooting by using different hnrmonal combinations and additives. The number of shoots obtained per explant were maximized after adding various additives along with hormones. The role of ethylene scavengers i.e, silver nitrates plays a very important role in enhancing the number of shoots per explant. In cultivar PMC, the number of shoots obtained per explant was increased from 9.6 to 20.5 with silver nitrate. In other cultivars there was an increase of around 20 per cent as against the media not substitute with silver nitrate. However the cultivars like NCS3 reacted negatively towards various additives by producing less number of shoots than in unsubstituted media. The above observation indicates high genotype basis for multiple shooting in cotton. This study is first of it's own kind and can be used commercially for developing transgenic cotton.
