Abstract

An independent traffic survey is conducted at thirty selected points by physical counting in both directions of the traffic flow to estimate the emission rates of the traffic related gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide within the urban limits, as automobiles are the key sources of air pollution in Madurai city. It is studied from the present investigation that carbon monoxide ranks first in terms of the quantity of emission loads in the study area followed by sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. By considering the estimated emission loads and the adverse effects of these criteria air Pollutants, it is concluded that implementation of scientific traffic management strategies and execution of vehicular pollution abatement measures are inevitable to safeguard the health and both the personal and social wealth of the inhabitants of Madurai city.
