FERULIC ACID BIOCONVERSION INTO VANILLIN BY HIGH AND LOW-DENSITY CULTURES OF PYCNOPORLIS CINNABARINLIS WITH DIFFERENT CARBON AND NITROGEN SOURCES

Abstract

The efficiency of ferulic acid bioconversion into vanillin by low and high density cultures of Pycnoporus cinnabarinus NCIM No. 1181 with various carbon and nitrogen sources were studied. The mixed medium with maltose as carbon source and ammonium dihydrogen orthophosphate as nitrogen source was found to be the best for the synthesis of vanillin (22.42mg/1), though the increase in biomass was medium, compared to other carbon sources such as glucose and fructose and nitrogen sources such as ammonium chloride and ammonium sulphate. The direct correlation of high biomass with increased vanillin synthesis was estabilished for the mixed medium. Glucose and fructose as carbon source and ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate as nitrogen sources though resulted in increased biomass, were found to be inefficient for the bioconversion of ferullic acid into vanillin.
