VERMICOMPOSTING ECO FRIENDLY DISPOSAL METHOD FOR MSW AND VEGETABLE WASTE ALONG WITH INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENTS

B. HEMALATHA AND T. MEENAMBAL

Abstract

Vermicomposting Technology was adopted to prepare vermicast using partially decomposed municipal solid waste, vegetable waste by employing indigenous earthworm species. This process was carried out with the use of raw dairy and distillery effluents to provide the moisture content for the wastes. This study was convened to study the bio-degradability of municipal solid waste and vegetables waste and also the reuse of the industrial effluents. The study was enunciated by studying the characteristics of the selected vegetable waste and municipal solid waste. This study was executed under effluent conditions. The samples were initially allowed to the reactor for 15 — 20 days for partial decomposition by natural method. Then earthworms were inoculated to the partially decomposed waste for further decomposition. The compost of required quality was obtained in both the conditions as follows. Municipal Solid Waste — 20 days (Dairy) 28 days (Distillery); Vegetable Waste — 13 days (Dairy) 15 days (Distillery) The result shows the samples with dairy effluent were high in nutrient content, worm population and required less days in processing.
