Abstract
Six fungal colonies belonging to the genus Aspergillus, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium and Penicillium isolated from contaminated Vaigai river bed were studied for their antibiotic activity against five enteric pathogens. The isolate with highest inhibitory activity was screened and further its biochemical and enzyme action was compared with other isolates. Finally the antibacterial activity was standardized with commercially available drugs. Penicillium and Rhizoctonia sp. was found to be the most effective against enteric pathogens.
