Abstract
Imposed water deficit stress affected of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. viz., C 306, PBW 154, PBW 175, PBW 396, WH 542, PBW 519, PB'W 520, PBW 527 and PBW 527) seedlings adversely, leading to the accumulation of total free sugars for maintenance of their turgor. The activities of amylases and acid invertases increased markedly over the control at high stress levels only. Specific activities of hydrolases showed closed relationship with relative growth rate and total free sugars. The role of these hydrolases in solute accumulation by hydrolyzing sucrose under variable water level is suggested.
