Abstract

The beneficial health effects of probiotics are well known. But as these effects differ with the type of probiotics, the present study was conducted to isolate a new microbial strain which shows probiotic properties. In the present study 30 human faecal samples were screened for the presence of lactobacillus. Nine rod shaped isolates were subjected further to microbiological and biochemical characterization to check their probiotic properties. The acid and bile tolerance of all the strains was also carried out to select a probiotic strain which can establish itself in the gut. One strain showing maximum acid and bile tolerance activity has been selected as a new probiotic isolate.
