GROWTH OF CYANOBACTERIA SPIRLILINA, MICROCYSTIS AND CHROOCOCCUS IN SELECTED CULTURE MEDIA

V.W. LANDE AND LALITA N. SAN GOLKAR

Abstract

Economically and ecologically important cyanobacteria Spirulina subsalsa, Microcystis aeruginosa, and Chroococcus cohaerens from lentic water bodies were isolated and characterized for growth using selected liquid culture media viz. Zarrouk's medium (ZM), BC 11 medium, Chu 10 medium and Bold basal medium (BBM). These media were screened for all the test species on the basis of growth rate and biomass yield. Considering the growth parameters, BG11 medium was suitable for M. aeruginosa, and C. cohaerens, however, ZM medium was selectively found suitable for S. subsalsa. The maximum specific growth rate (p max) varied from 0.127 d-1 to 0.174 ft', 0.126 cl-' to 0.173 d-' and 0.065 d-' to 0.158 d-1 for S. subsalsa, M. aeruginosa, and C. cohaerens respectively, which occurred from 3rd to 5th day, the earlier being in the selected media.
