SUBHAGAR SERAMAN, ARVINDAN RAJENDRAN AND VIRUTHAGIRI THANGAVELU

Abstract

Statins (Hypolipidemic Agents) act as an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, are the main class of drugs to reduce Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDLC) levels. Statins are the fungal secondary metabolites which selectively inhibit hydroxymethyl glutaryl coenzyme A red uctase, the first enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Various fungi have been used to produce different types of statins commercially. This review deals with the structure, biosynthesis of statins, fermentative and synthetic production of sta tins, and application of statins.
