Abstract

The present investigation was an attempt in the direction of understanding the impact of lime sludge waste of paper mill on the growth and development of planktons. It is revealed from the result that lime sludge waste increases the pH, alkalinity and hardness of water thereby increasing the population of the plankton. There is no harmful substance in the lime sludge waste of the paper mill.Application of lime sludge waste up to 5% showed better results in growth and development of planktonic flora in a laboratory conducted experiment in beaker. However, at higher concentration (10%), the growth and development of plankton were found to be declined and lower in number as compared to the control (without lime sludge waste). Results also indicate that lime sludge waste of paper mill can be used as alternative source of limestone for fisheries in Assam.
