A SURVEY OF THE MACRO POLLUTANTS IN THE INTERTIDAL AND MANGROVE ENVIRONMENT OF VELLAR ESTUARY, SOUTH EAST COAST OF INDIA

Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to assess the macro pollutants (solid wastes) contamination of Vellar estuary. South East coast of India during October 2004 to March 2005. The level of solid waste contamination was higher in inlertidal zone, due to anthropogenic activities. Major solid wastes includes cement hags, cigarette packets, cigarette butts, disposable plastic cup, fiber boat piece, nylon rope, piece of cloth, piece of glass bottles, plastic carry bags, polythene bags, pieces of pot, rubber footwear and thermocole wastes etc. The results were discussed in relation to their possible impacts on the state of health of coastal flora and fauna.
