BYSSOGENESIS AND TISSUE SWELLING IN PERNA VIRIDIS UNDER THE STRESS OF SALINITY AND HEAVY METALS

S. Sarala Nair and G. Madhukumar

Abstract

Biological test systems are used world wide for ecomonitoring. The feasibility of employing certain physiological responses in P. viridis exposed to environmental stressors is assessed in the present report. Environmental stressors like salinity and heavy metals mercury and zinc were used. Very sharp decline in byssogenesis and in crease in tossue sarthing under stress were vecorded. Further studies are essential for qualification and stadardisation of the present results.
