Abstract
The antimicrobial activity of crude leaf extracts of Pomegranate (Punica granatum L) and Pongamia pinnata seeds were studied against six enteric bacteria and one fungal species.The extraction was done in three solvents, viz.,water, ethanol and propanol, and the activity was tested by disc-diffusion technique.The three solvent extracts of Punica granatum showed antibacterial as well as antifungal activity whereas Pongamia pinnata seed extract gave positive results with ethanol and propanol extracts. Staphylococcos aureus is highly sensitive to both the sources, whereas Bacillus subtilis was found to be resistant to Punica granatum and Enterobacter aeruginosa to Pongamia pinnata. Propanol was found to be a good solvent for both the plant materials.
