Abstract

Seafoods are produced or harvested from an environment that is often being subjected to various kinds of hazards like pollutants and biological contaminants. These hazards have caused major concern for safety of seafood in relation to their adverse effects on human health when consumed with toxic levels. Also, undesirable levels of various hazards in seafood have led to detention/rejection of exportable items by major seafood importing countries resulting into the economic loss to the seafood processors. It is therefore felt necessary to assess the incidence and the potential of these hazards in causing ill effects to seafood consumers, and to appraise their safety aspects.A detailed review of various environmental hazards to seafood is provided in the study.
