Abstract

I he present study to assess the antibacterial activity of seaweeds from die Venal- and Uppanar estuaries was carried 011t using three different solvents namely acetone, methanol and diethyl ether A total of 6 seaweeds were tested against 8 pathogens. Off which the antibacterial activity was noted to be the maximum In Phaeophyceae followed by Rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae. Of tile tested pathogens Stophyhuoccus mucus, Psetfilomonos ocruginoso and Bacillus sohtais were highly susceptible whereas Escherichio ( oh, Vihrio potohoctoolyticus, KlebNiello pocomonior and Vilma choletue were highly resistant against tested algal extracts. Among the solvents diethyl ether was more effective the series of activity was followed by methanol and acetone. Comparing the fresh and dry extracts, samples of dry extracts were more active. Overall, the samples collected from the lippanar estuary showed higher activity when compared to the samples from Venal. estuary.
