Abstract

In vivo and in vitro determination of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was done at different time points in brain, whole blood and liver of VVistar rats treated with an organophosphorous pesticide (OP), chlorpyrifos 48% EC (CPP). Brain and blood showed in vivo as well as in vitro inhibition of AChE, but in the liver inhibition of enzyme took place in vivo only. Both in vivo and in vitro AChE inhibition in brain was greater than that of the blood, indicating that blood AChE underestimates the inhibition of AChE in brain on chlorpyrifos (CPP) exposed Wistar rats, which is inconsistent with the earlier reports on organophosphorous pesticide (OP) exposures, where it was stated that blood AChE overestimate the inhibition of brain AChE.
