Abstract
The Upper and Lower Lakes of Bhopal have been identified as wetland of national importance by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India known as Bhoj wetland.The upper lake is one of the major sources of drinking water for the people of Bhopal. Due to anthropogenic pressure water quality of both the lakes have deteriorated considerably in the past three-decades. In the present investigation pollution indicator species and species indicating the trophic status have been studied.Among these some species of phytoplankton were identified which show the degree of pollution level and species of zooplankton which shows trophic status (Mesotrophic, Meso-eutrophic & Eutrophic) of the water body. Numbers of species of Macrophytes were also identified which indicate heavy metallic contamination in water body.
